If you’re looking into home repair and maintenance, you may see the term “HVAC” all over the place. If you’re new to homeownership, you might not be sure yet what exactly this term means.
Put simply, HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. HVAC systems are systems that, as the name may suggest to you, are responsible for the heating, cooling, and ventilation of your home. These HVAC systems can have multiple functions combined into one device, or these systems can be comprised of a number of separate devices each responsible for their own individual function. Examples of these devices can include air conditioners, heat pumps, ducts, furnaces, boilers, radiant heating systems, and even humidifiers and dehumidifiers. Most of these devices are controlled in a centralized panel attached to the thermostat, which combines the functions of heating, cooling, and whatever else your individual HVAC system is built to accommodate and provide through your thermostat.
The purpose of your HVAC system is to ensure your home is as comfortable as it possibly can be, whether it is making sure you’re kept cozy and warm in the middle of December or doing the heavy lifting of protecting your home from the sometimes unbearably high heats of Texan summers.
